Understanding Import Export Code (IEC) requirements and benefits

RegisterEasy Editorial Team · Updated 11 Oct 2026 · 2 min read

The DGFT IEC profile supports import and export activity. Learn the application prerequisites and why profile maintenance should be checked on the current DGFT portal.

An Importer-Exporter Code is a key DGFT business identifier for import and export activity, subject to specified exemptions. DGFT’s live IEC profile page describes application, linking, profile viewing, modification and other services. Use the live DGFT portal for the current application route and maintenance requirements.

Check whether your activity needs an IEC

DGFT states that an IEC is generally required for import or export, except where specifically exempted. For service exports, the portal notes an exception unless the provider is taking benefits under the Foreign Trade Policy. Check the current Foreign Trade Policy and the exact transaction before relying on an exemption.

IEC issuance is associated with the firm’s PAN, but a separate DGFT application and profile are still required. Entity type, PAN, bank account and valid address are among the prerequisites listed by DGFT.

Prepare the DGFT application

  1. Confirm the importing or exporting entity’s legal name, PAN, entity form and active bank account details.
  2. Check the registered address and keep evidence ready; DGFT notes that an address may be physically verified.
  3. Create or use the appropriate DGFT account and apply through the current IEC service.
  4. Review every profile field and download the issued certificate or acknowledgement for company records.

Maintain the profile and avoid stale advice

DGFT provides functions to view and update or modify an IEC profile, among other management tasks. Do not rely on an old statement that an IEC never needs attention: check the current portal, notifications and Foreign Trade Policy for profile confirmation deadlines and consequences of non-compliance.

A change in entity name, address, bank details or other firm information should prompt a review of the DGFT profile and related registrations. Keep proof of submissions and check the status after filing.
